Is thermowood sustainable?

Yes. Thermowood is made from pine sourced from FSC- and PEFC-certified forests and modified with only heat and steam — no chemical preservatives. Its 25+ year service life above ground means less frequent replacement, and at end of life it can be handled like untreated wood.

Is Thermosticks wood FSC or PEFC certified?

Thermosticks sources its pine from FSC- and PEFC-certified Nordic forests. Certification of the source forests means the timber is grown under independently audited, responsible forestry standards.

Can thermowood be recycled or burned?

Yes. Because the ThermoWood process adds no chemicals — only heat and steam — thermowood offcuts and end-of-life boards can be reused, chipped, or burned like untreated wood. No special disposal is required.

Is thermally modified wood non-toxic?

Yes. Thermal modification uses heat and steam at 212 °C with no added preservatives, so there is nothing to leach out. The boards are safe to handle, cut, and sand like ordinary untreated pine.

Pine from forests that are managed, not mined.

Every board we sell begins in Nordic forests certified under FSC and PEFC — the two major international standards for responsible forestry. Certification means the forest is regrown faster than it's harvested, and the chain from stump to sawmill is independently audited.

From there, the wood is thermally modified in Finland to the ThermoWood® standard using only heat and steam at 212 °C. No copper, no borates, no preservatives — which is why offcuts can be handled, sanded, and burned like untreated wood.
